The geometric specifications for the union jack and the sizes and positioning of the stars are given in an attachment to Executive Order 10834 of 21 August 1959, printed in 3 CFR, 1959–1963 Comp., p. 368.
The current dimensions of the image (version of 00:43, 14 May 2008), 1235 × 650 pixels (which represents an aspect ratio of 1.9:1.0), were chosen to allow as much as possible of the final geometric manipulations to be performed using whole numbers, avoiding the need for scaling. (This also results in each stripe being 50 pixels high.)
The versions of 04:42, 5 April 2007, and later (which were written from scratch) are ineligible for copyright and in the public domain. (Earlier versions were derived from the Open Clip Art library and were covered by the Open Clip Art license.)
The current version of this image (version of 00:43, 14 May 2008) has been checked to be valid SVG 1.1.
It is easy to put a border around this image:
[[Image:Flag of the United States.svg|border|100px]]
This image shows a flag, a coat of arms, a seal or some other official insignia. The use of such symbols is restricted in many countries. These restrictions are independent of the copyright status.
This image is ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain, because it consists entirely of information that is common property and contains no original authorship.
(Flipped definition of "pt" to point upward (previously pointed downward) in order to make the code more intuitive; expanded "id" names to make code more readable; see discussion page for more info.)
(Tightened file size further, plus made minor modifications to allow the SVG file to be rendered properly by browsers with less robust SVG support (such as Apple Safari))
(Proposed simplified version written from scratch, derived directly from http://assembler.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode04/usc_sec_04_00000001----000-notes.html (should be geometrically identical))
(Previous version had a miscalculation--stars were shifted left by 0.02%, whoops! Also, this version now uses viewBox to have a reasonable default size.)
